Thank you to all who came out to the townhall with Mayor Heikkala on Monday, May 20th. If you didn’t get a chance to attend, please check out the recording.
The Mayor still thinks the City doesn’t have any power to stop the turnpike.
Go to timestamp 15:30 and listen to legal expert Rob Norman talk about how the City can help us in the legislature.
Go to timestamp 22:00 and listen to Dave Moore state that the fundamental issue is that the City seems to have given up and have accepted the propaganda that they have no power to stop this, but the Citizen’s viewpoint is that we WILL NOT COMPLY.
Timestamp 25:00, listen to Rob Norman talk about how the City needs to convince the OTA that the plans are not feasible and to move on; that the City doesn’t have a silver bullet but lots of shotgun shells to expend. “It starts to be pointless to build a pointless road.”
Timestamp 29:00 talking about Federal Floodway Act not allowing any grade change.
Timestamp 44:15 the Mayor agrees with us that a sunsetting clause within the turnpike enabling act would be a “great strategy” to stop the surprise builds.
Timestamp 48:00 minutes. A citizen makes the point that they aren’t allowed given a permit to build on their land, so why can the turnpike get a permit to build over the watershed?
Timestamp 54:25 minutes. Representative Annie Menz describes the bills she has run for us, including the “real notice” bill and her “open record request” bill.
Timestamp 1hour, 5 minutes, watch Kate Contreras ask the Mayor to contact all the Transportation Committee members in the House and Senate and then Representative Annie Menz piping up and letting the Mayor she can facilitate that.
On May 21, 2024, Rep. Menz sent Mayor Heikkila an email with all the contact information of the members of the House Committee on Transportation and A&B Subcommittee on Transportation. Her office will reach out to the chairs of both committees and discuss possible in-person meeting opportunities with the Mayor.
By the end of the hour long town hall, the Mayor was presented with several great avenues to pursue to effectively fight for his constituents and the City of Norman.
Please continue to educate, hold accountable and demand effective representation from our elected officials. If they fail, show up at the ballot box and replace them.
Can’t quit, won’t quit. KEEP FIGHTING!
PIKE OFF OTA (501 c4) and Oklahomans for Responsible Transportation, Foundation (501 c3) are leading the charge in legal injunctive avenues and legislative reform and they could use your help. They are trying to dismantle a corrupt Goliath within our state and are doing a great job. Be part of the solution!
